What Is Adware? A Quick Overview

What is adware? Well, mostly, it’s annoying. And no one is safe from it. If you make a habit of downloading free software, you have probably had to deal with adware. Even just innocently surfing the Internet can make you the victim of an adware attack, sometimes in the form of popups that just won’t let you leave a site. Well not until you buy something anyway.

Adware is a form of forced advertising. People who use it are determined to make you look at their ads and consider buying their products, whether you want to or not. Why they think annoying you is the best way to get you to buy their products is a mystery? Then again, since they keep on doing it, it must work to some degree.

So is adware dangerous to your computer? Well, unlike spyware, viruses, and other malicious programs, adware isn’t there to damage your computer or steal your information. However, it is irritating. And, on top of being irritating, it can also drastically slow down your computer. On some computers where adware has been installed, operations that should take mere seconds can end up taking 5 or 10 minutes. So, while adware doesn’t steal your information or cause your computer to crash, it does rob you of one of your most valuable assets. Time.

Luckily, while there are many different kinds of adware, and many different ways it can be snuck onto your computer, there are also many ways to protect yourself against it. Prevention is a good one. You should be careful when downloading free software programs. In fact, you should only download such programs from sites where the programs are guaranteed adware free. And, even then, you should scan the programs yourself, just to be on the safe side. And, if there is already adware on your computer, you can learn how to remove it.
